Folic acid, also called « vitamin B9 or folate », plays an important role in the production of DNA. It effectively acts on cell regeneration of the mouth, intestines, blood, and stomach.

A deficiency in folic acid reduces the number of cell division (mitosis) and increases the volume of those already present (macrocythaemia). This leads to macrocytic anemia (a presence of red blood cells, of which the volume exceeds its normal level), called megaloblastic.
